Silence the noise. Quiet your mind.

Take a moment to think… when was the last time you experienced true silence for more than just a few seconds? If you can’t remember it, you’re not the only one. From podcasts in the car, to music in the shower, to TV while washing dishes, our busy modern lives are a constant stream of stimulation and distraction. These days, being “alone with your thoughts” can be downright intimidating. But it can also be incredibly transformative. Somewhere along the way, in the race to “do it all,” we’ve forgotten the joy of doing absolutely nothing. The good news? We’re just a little out of practice, and we’re here to help provide the resources and practices to assist you.

What is Silence for Seven?

At Silence for Seven, our mission is pretty simple—to inspire millions of people to sit in total silence for 7 minutes a day and rediscover the power of just existing. Why 7 minutes? Well, It’s short enough to fit into our busy schedules, but long enough to give our minds the chance to start quieting down. We truly believe that the peace, focus, and creativity found through this practice has the potential to change your life – and just maybe – the world.

Seven Tips for Your Seven Minutes

Sitting in silence may be challenging at first, but luckily, the process is incredibly easy.

Once a day, carve out 7 minutes to sit down in a quiet place, put away your phone, close your eyes, and just be. If you’re not sure how, here are some pointers to help guide you through.

  1. Sit up straight! Laying down you may fall asleep, which is not so terrible, but it’s a different kind of rest. :)

  2. Take a deep breath. Close your eyes and focus on your heart.

  3. Gently recall seven things you’re grateful for.

  4. Choose a calming word like “peace” or “love,” and repeat it to gently recenter into silence.

  5. When your mind wanders, it's okay, just kindly guide it back - no judgement.

  6. Observe what you hear and feel and see what happens.

  7. If you’d like, use the timer below as a guide. Once all of the segments fill in, your seven minutes is up! Celebrate the time you took for yourself.

“No matter how sophisticated you may be, a large granite mountain cannot be denied — it speaks in silence to the very core of your being” - Ansel Adams
